	Accueil	The Netherlands Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (BBK), Union of Visual Artists. What is the BBK? The BBK is the only nation-wide, professional union in the Netherlands that represents independently working, visual artists. Set up in 1945 as a result of the artists' resistance movement, it has established itself as a progressive art administration during its 60-year existence. Fighting against demolition plans, against cutting costs, and against attacks on art and culture are among the most important aspects of this visual artists' union. And of even greater importance is the positive contribution the BBK has made in obtaining a better art administration. Acknowledging the visual arts as an occupation is one of the union's most significant demands. The BBK is in no way affiliated with any political party or movement. WHAT does the BBK do? The BBK will look after the collective as well as the individual interests of professional, visual artists who are working and living in the Netherlands. The BBK will make sure that these artists have the facilities needed to practice their occupation in an 'undisturbed' environment. On a centralized level (ministries, etc.) as well as on a decentralized level (provincial, municipal councils), the BBK has continually forged the way toward a combined art and artists administration. The BBK places provincial and /or municipal levels foremost and in the highest regard. This is because provincial and/or municipal councils are found to be more efficient in working with the administration, since they tend to have more direct contact with the artists and the public. What does the BBK do for the individual artist? Together with the essential concern that every artist must be covered by general policy measures, the BBK's Advice Bureau offers its members individual support for problems arising from the profession. Practical advice, personal support with legal / fiscal cases and conflicts with the authorities, art institutions, commissions, etc How does the BBK work? The annual, general members' assembly of the BBK is the 'boss' and decides on the administration. The assembly chooses the regional candidates who are responsible for the decision-making policies. There are also provincial divisions within the separate administrations that are primarily active in their own respective regions. The regional administration of the BBK chooses a chairman and a daily administrator from among the local members. It is by working together with the regional offices that the BBK is able to regulate and coordinate its daily course of affairs. BBK - Paper and Website There is a newspaper for BBK members. The publication contains articles on the developments within the art administration by the state, the provinces and the municipalities. It also gives further information over the different aspects that visual artists experience while practicing their craft, as well as the personal experiences from our members. In joining the BBK, one will always have the opportunity to display a members' advertisement whereby one can advertise completely free of charge. One can also take advantage of the free-of-cost possibility to publicize one's own exhibition, event, etc. Our website keeps you up-to-date with the very latest information and at the same time offers a forum in which members can discuss current questions with each other.
